"Checkers is a great game! Although I get confused trying to figure 4 or 5 moves
ahead, I still enjoy playing. I had some contact with Tommy Wiswell back in the early
1950's. I remember back in the early 1930's when I was 5 or 6 years old, I would beg my
dad to play checkers. He was good, could see moves well ahead of the game, but he did not
know anything about book moves. I remember he and Glen Romine of West Virginia would play
for hours and my dad would always win until Glen started studying the book. Glen Romine
got quite good. He would find errors in book published in the 1940's and annotate them
with corrections. He gave me those books. He and Mr. King of West Virginia, I remember,
often played. I doubt if it was the same Mr. King that was a champion player, but he could
be. I never see anyone playing checkers anymore. Seems like most of the younger generation
want to play computer games. GOOD LUCK"

sometime..."

strength and rarely make a mistake. I'll maybe do an upgrade in 1998 but with
two kids now it's really hard finding the time to work on what is after all
only a hobby!"

'solved' checkers. Which means that they can now make a computer opponent that will
at least draw you. Heard of this? It could mean a pretty big downfall in
checkers playing over the internet if it ever gets out onto the PC..."
"This is nonsense Joe, Checkers is NOT solved. The
strongest program in the world is certainly a little stronger than the human world
champion and there are a number of programs which play at GrandMaster level, however that
doesn't mean it'll stop people playing for the challenge themselves."

- "I have Judson McCranie's DOS Checkers which I find to be very, very good. Twice
played 2 computers against each other at the highest levels (a 10 mHz XT and a 486-25).
The computer starting first won each time. Game 2 took several days with game time of
72485.9 seconds (20.13 hours), program time of 10088.7 (2.8 hours), and your time of
62397.3 (17.33 hours). Last move was E3-H8 and was move #52. Game started at level 6 and
ended at level 11. I'm not a very good player but am interested in Checkers from a
technical standpoint in relation to artificial intelligence."

Also, I agree with Leo Levitt. Online credit card order forms are nice. If
I'm ever in England I'd like to stop by and visit you, Murray Cash and Robert Waldtuffel
